A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the hours before former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
