The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
