During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
